I recently read an article that advised that you should plan out January in December so that when you return after the Christmas break, everyone knows what to do and you can jump straight in. As good as it sounds from a planning point of view, I also think it’s a bit harsh, and a missed opportunity.
For many the holiday period and the start of a new year means reflecting and reconsidering various aspects of your life. From the resolutions we make to be healthier and spend more time with loved ones, to thinking about whether or not we’re happy in our current job.
With Christmas being our busiest time I deliberately didn’t want us to plan out January until we’d had some time off. Some time to get some perspective from being right in the middle of the thick of it. A chance to take a proper step back and assess where we are and where we want to go.
For a business like Glimt.it this makes sense. This week is a clear out week for us. An early spring cleaning if you so wish – out with Christmas and in with the new season. But it also makes sense from the point of Glimt.it being a very young company.
Our road ahead could take many shapes. As the team came back after the Christmas period I wanted to make the most of what having had a break from work and from Glimt.it had sparked in terms of thoughts. Good and bad. So today we’ve done very little but reflect, brainstorm and talk. About what worked well, what didn’t work so well and the things we’d love to do. With that as a base, we’ve also talked about the things we as a business need to do and what our priorities are.
It’s been a great way to start off the new year. We have a long list of things that we want to do and things we know we can do even better. Though we could have jumped straight back into business as usual mode today, this one day of taking a step back is one I know will benefit us both in the near future and further down the line.
