This year of day to day posts are coming to an end and as some of you may have noticed I haven’t been as timely at posting on the actual day. Partly due to a feeling of having less things to say but also that the daily commitment at times is hard to stick to.
It’s become particularly obvious when I’ve been away from London. At conferences or trips where the minutes that you have to yourself during the day are substantially less than under normal circumstances at home. Most of my posts have been written on the tube ride back from work. That’s where the first draft has been formed and a quick review later that evening has created the final post of the day. When I’m away I don’t have that down time and as a result it becomes a bit trickier to fit them in with everything else.
Although I still love to write these posts, when I’m away they fall lower down on the priority list compared to spending time with the people that surround me. And at times falling behind and having to catch up is something that has followed me and felt not like a chore but definitely something that I have to do rather than want to do. And with that in mind the future of these posts are decided.
From the beginning these posts was meant as a way for me to share my experiences and learnings along the way from starting with an idea to seeing what that actually turned into. Though the year has taken a different shape than what I had in mind, it’s been a great experience and experiment getting into writing a little something every/most day. In the beginning finding a subject was easier and motivation was higher. As was my enthusiasm. But writing back then took longer than it does now as I paid more attention to the subject and how I constructed my posts. Today, 361 days in, writing comes easy and although I at times struggle a little with the subject, feeling like I have less to share, I’ve definitely entered some kind of flow where I’m more comfortable with both writing these posts, sharing them, my thoughts, experiences and opinions. But there is no denying that at times, particularly lately, I’ve felt I’m writing for writings sake rather than actually having something I want to communicate. And that combined with the occasional feeling of must rather than want means that going forward, in 2013, I won’t be writing a post every day but instead write when I actually feel like I have something to share. It’s the good old quality over quantity argument and though there will most certainly be general post of the more “pondering” nature, I’m looking forward to getting back into writing more UX related post too. Something that has taken a back seat due to the commitment of writing one post a day in the 2012 day by day series.
