Today it’s Christmas in Sweden. I started the day with a run out on the fields outside of my mum’ house, passing strangers and melting puddles of snow on the way. Though most of the snow has melted it still feels like Christmas and it’s good to be home with my family.
As a little girl I remember looking out the window seeing no snow and wondering how Santa would arrive with his reindeers and sleigh. But then Santa magically appeared anyway and I got used to that the lack of snow on Christmas Eve didn’t stop Santa from paying a visit.
Santa hasn’t been paying a visit today but the usual food, treats, gifts and of course the traditional ‘Kalle och hans vänner‘ has been present. Despite having seen Kalle Anka for so many years I still watch it every year and so does a large part of the Swedish population. It’s an hour of Disney medley shown at 3pm on Christmas Eve and last year 3.5 of Sweden’s around 9 million inhabitants watched it. A strange tradition that’s been in place and shown every year since 1960 and, which to many of us Swedes, is a symbol that it’s really Christmas.
As Benjamin Syrsa or Jiminy Cricket as he’s called in english says – from all of us to all of you, a very, merry Christmas.
