I’ve missed many birthdays due to living abroad. Today it’s one my dearest friend’s birthday. A friend who for a number of reason will always hold a special place in my heart, not the least as it was her and I that together moved to London nearly 7 years ago on Valentines day.
Her name, as the cake reveals, is Karin and we’ve experienced a lot together. Our first year in London is one of the most fun years I’ve ever had and the day she told me she was moving back to Sweden, which was a few years later, was not one of my favourite days. But today it’s her birthday and though I’m not sure I would have seen her if I’d been home, I’d liked to have been there anyway.
I consider birthdays very important and I love companies who give you the day off on your special day, or on another day should you want to be in the office and enjoy it with your colleagues. Birthdays are special, whether you care much for them or not, each one marks the day you were born. They bring back memories to people and to the person whose birthday it is and I do think that it’s a day when the person, whose birthday it is, should be made to feel extra special and celebrated. I wrote a bit about my experience as a kid on my own birthday this year and also how I think we can learn much when it comes to celebrating in the workplace.
To return to my friend’s birthday and the many others I’ve missed for family and friends back home, I do want to make it to more of them. Years go by and few occasions are as valuable and rewarding as when people get together to celebrate someone they really love and care about.
Happy birthday Karin.
