Today is my mum’s birthday and I’ve taken the day off to spend it with her back home. Sure, there is work to be done, but nothing that is so important that it can’t wait. Today is a special day and I’m spending it with a special person.
I believe in celebrations and whilst I can’t always be home for my family’s birthdays, if I can I like to be. Having spent nearly 16 years abroad, the everyday occasions that I’ve missed out on are increasingly at the front of my mind. Time is the one thing we’ll always wish we had more of and there’s been far too many times where the cost of flights, clashes with work I can’t get out of etc. has meant that I’ve not been able to attend birthdays, housewarmings and other occasions. Now that I’m in the fortunate position to not have someone telling me I can’t take a day off, or work from somewhere else for a few days, I’m making the most of it. In the end it’s my responsibility to get the work done and whether I do a bit more tomorrow or later in the week doesn’t really matter. As long as the work gets done, there should be no reason why important occasions in our loved ones lives should be missed because of work.
Happy birthday mum!
