When something happens that is out of your control, having an employer that is understanding and supportive is worth everything.
The value of the understanding employer is not just important for the bigger things. Even small happenings like illness or appointments and deliveries that can’t be moved can turn your plans upside down. At times it’s hard to make it all work and get time for everything without ending up running around like a headless chicken during the weekend. A good employer acknowledges this and does what they can to facilitate the employee’s well being outside of work, perhaps suggesting working from home for a day, or providing a bit more flexibility in terms of working hours. After all, if the employee is stressed outside of work, they will be stressed at work and definitely not performing their best. So, besides being a good employer it is also in their and the company’s interest.
Then there are the events that throw everything up in the air and where you have no control but to take it as it comes. These events may cause worry or distress with the employee, make them a little less focused than normal, perhaps more tired and short fused and they make planning really hard. There is nothing to do but take each day as it comes. In these situations the last thing the employee needs is worrying about work. How to explain it. If it’s going to be ok. What people might think or say. Instead they need to focus on what ever has happened and save the rest of their energy for functioning and carrying on as usual the best they can.
Though the last week hasn’t been that serious it has caused a lot of worry and change of plans with short notice and I’ve really appreciated the understanding and support from where I work. Particularly as what I’m dealing with is “just” our cat that is poorly. Not every employer who consider this something of importance. So thank you. You know who you are.
