This week I’ve been trying out a more structured approach to working from home and on byflok. I’ve made sure there has been as few disruptions as possible and trialled setting aside focused time for certain tasks. And it seems to work.
Last week and the week before a fair bit time went to life admin, sorting out part time work and preparing the morning seminar in Sweden. Now that’s done there is a bit more focused time ahead of us moving the “office” to NYC for a week. But there are still a million and one things to do. They range from bigger and more time consuming byflock tasks, to small admin tasks, to life admin and aspects relating to my freelance business. Working from home means there is more freedom to get those things sorted but unless you’re careful that also means that lots of little things ends up taking over your day and before you know it there’s no time left for the bigger things that you meant to do. Like working on our products.
The first thing I’ve done in the mornings this week is to go through my day and the things that needed doing. It’s something I normally do at the day job and I’m trying to work up a similar routine for working more flexibly and on byflock. Though I’m pretty well disciplined there are more distractions and more things to do and sort out when you work from home and to make sure that time didn’t just “disappear” I’ve trialled out a system that helps me feel in control of all the little things that need doing whilst at the same time ensure I get some focused time to work on our products. More precisely I’ve been writing down a list of all the small admin like things that need looking after and have allocated them throughout the days for when I’d be in need of e.g. a prototyping break. It seems to have worked by providing me with peace of mind that they were being taken care of as well as some focused product time. And as the added benefit I’ve actually managed to get a lot more of the small admin tasks done at the time when the reminder has popped up, rather than just snoozing it and pushing it to later in the day.
