Today Sweden played England in Euro 2012. Naturally I’d hoped we’d win but not this time. I don’t normally watch football but during big tournaments I get quite interested, and even more so when it’s a game against the country I live in.
I moved to Denmark in 2000 and have lived abroad since. My sister jokes saying I’m more Swedish than they are and it’s probably true. As a live abroad Swede I’ve become even more proud of the country I come from and Swedish traditions, holidays and design are increasingly important. When Sweden scored the first of their goals yesterday I jumped with joy together with a Swedish friend in a pub full of brits. When we scored the second goal and turned the game in our favour we jumped even more. Not in a show off way against the English but just out of joy. And thankfully, the others didn’t seem to mind but instead they smiled.
At my old job we used to have a sweepstake and make a thing out of it. It got the spirit going and a bit of banter. Those little things to get people together over a common thing are really important in the workplace and it’s something I’m really looking forward to creating in the future with byflock. And for those of us who live abroad, making a thing out of something related to your home country, well, that adds a bit of extra fun. At least for me.
