No matter who I speak to everyone, irrespectively of profession come across some frustrations at work. Just as easy as it is to get worked up over these things, just as easy is it to forget that when all is said and done, it’s just work.
A few years back I worked on a project that used to get me so worked up that I’d bring all the frustrations home with me after the work day eventually ended. The first thing I’d tell D about when I got home was something that happened at work. And it wasn’t happy stories. I’d get so frustrated and angry that I’d cry. On a near daily basis. It was a really draining and stressful project and it made me unhappy. D used to hug and comfort me, telling me that I had to stop taking it so seriously. How it wasn’t worth my health. And he’s right. No project is.
Most of the things work wise that have made me that upset are things that easily can be avoided with the right people, good communication and excellent project management. Easier said than done of course. But still, simple. These things can be avoided. And should be.
Of course, there might be the off chance that I let the project get to me a bit too much. When that does happen we should try to be a bit more like Ferdinande. Sit back and smell the flowers. Put the things that get to us at a distance until we’re composed enough to assess the situation and come up with an action plan of how to take the first steps to solving the situation. Complaining and being frustrated is doing noone good and though needed to some extent in order to clear the air, there comes a point when it’s doing nothing but getting the atmosphere of the project down.
Work is such a big part of our lives and it’s supposed to be a place where we’re happy. If we’re not and we’re continuously bringing the problems home with us, affecting our family life and relationships with friends, then we eventually have to make a decision on if it’s worth it. If the the answer is no, then we should go find another job that will make us happier.
Work is work and there are more important things in life. Like our happiness.
