Yesterday I wrote about the value of time and used ‘buckets’ as a metaphor for allocation of time. This week my buckets have really been put to the test and the balance is, well, completely off.
It’s not ideal as this was actually a really busy week outside of my day job work (still work related though), but it is what it is and under the circumstances I have to just go with it.
A while back I read an article called When Bad Things Happen To Productive People. Though this thankfully isn’t one of those situations there are still things to learn from it in terms of what to do when you need to squeeze more than normal into your day, or when the time you have at hand gets compromised.
The seven rules as suggested in the article are:
- Acknowledge that the normal rules don’t apply for the time being
- Focus on the essential tasks, and cut back on everything else
- Make sure you get a lot of rest
- Ask for help
- Focus on the positive as much as possible
- Reboot yourself
- Say thank you
When Bad Things Happen To Productive People
For me rule number 2, 3, 4 and 7 are the most important ones right now.
-
2 – because I just have to get on with it and can’t do it all
3 – because if I don’t get some rest I won’t be of much use at all
5 – because moaning will only prolongue and make it more painful until I get to ‘done’
7 – because you should always acknowledge the people that have contributed, the people it’s affected and the people who’ve been particularly understanding
