On the 12th of August we’ll be sitting in the Olympic Stadium watching the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. The morning after, which is in exactly a month’s time I’m jumping on a plane back home to Sweden, and as I do that I’m also leaving what has been behind.
The last few months has been the complete opposite to what I had in mind. Though I’m working on a brilliant project, which I’m very proud of, it has put our product development at byflock to a more or less complete standstill. We’re at high risk of not getting our MVP out at the critical time that we had in mind. I am kicking myself for this. But, it’s not just me. My co-founder has also been kept busy and with both of our work commitments it’s made it tricky to get things moving at the speed it should. However, when it all comes down to it – that’s just excuses.
On Day 144 I wrote some advice to myself and others in our situation. The main one being:
You’ve committed to starting your company and if you really mean it there is no way around it but ensuring that your life is adjusted accordingly so that what is required for your company to succeed, or at least get to the next level, can happen. Until you make that adjustment nothing will change. So get to it.
As the London 2012 Games ring out and I jump on that plane I’m leaving working overtime and full time behind. When I return I’ll be working part time and spend considerable time on byflock each week. And all those meetings that haven’t been able to happen, they’ll be organised.
I’m looking forward to sitting in co-working spaces, meeting lots of new people, properly setting up the office at home and spend more time with D, though much of that I’ll be working on our things. We’re talking about renting out our flat for a week and spend it in NYC. If we do that I’ll bring my work along. There’s people to meet. Conversations to be had and lots of fun with our products. Though a little scary and I’m sure difficult to turn down full time contracting, this is what I have to do. It’ll be demanding and involve lots of work, but it is what I’ve been wanting to do for so long.
