Embarking on a new journey is a bit like sailing in an archipelago. You know some of the islands you want to visit and you’re probably pretty excited about them. Some may seem less interesting or perhaps even pointless to visit and sailing to some may even be a bit scary.
Today I’ve started plotting my islands and mapping my journey. It’s a great feeling but also a bit daunting. Each of my ideas have their own little archipelagos and many of the islands are of the same kind. Of course they vary in size, inhabitants and location but the nature of them are pretty much the same and I need to decide on what archipelago and what islands to visit first.
The order of things
It’s pretty tempting to set sail for the most exciting islands right away. The ones where I really start getting into the detail and define things. That’s what excites me the most. But location wise these islands are further away from me than some of the other ones right now. There’s nothing stopping me from going straight there but by doing so I know my total journey will be longer. The islands that are closest to me at the moment, though they right now may seem less interesting, I know I have to and also want to visit them at some point. Should I choose to go straight to the exciting ones I’d have to sail all the way back in a not too distant future and that will only prolong and complicate things. Because of course, when sailing there are also safety aspect to consider. You have to know your surroundings and that some routes are easier to sail whilst others more prone to turbulent weather. So, I’ll set out to make my journey as straight forward as possible but let the wind, the stars and my experiences along the way guide me.
